Illness of Students / Teachers

To maintain a safe, healthy, and hygienic school environment, the following norms shall be followed by all students, teachers, and other staff members.

  • All students, teachers, and staff members should maintain good personal hygiene and follow healthy habits.
  • Regular handwashing with soap and water or use of hand sanitiser is encouraged.
  • Coughing and sneezing should be covered with a tissue or the elbow.
  • Sharing of food, water bottles, utensils, medicines, or personal items should be avoided.
  • A student suffering from fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, a contagious infection, or any other significant illness should not attend school until sufficiently recovered.
  • Parents/guardians should inform the school promptly if their child is absent due to illness.
  • If a student becomes unwell during school hours, the class teacher should inform the school office/medical room and the parent or guardian.
  • The student may be kept separately from others, where appropriate, while waiting for a parent/guardian.
  • Students should not be given medicines at school without appropriate parental/guardian instructions and the school’s established procedure.
  • Students returning after a serious or contagious illness may be required to provide a medical certificate or doctor’s advice, where applicable.
  • Teachers and staff members suffering from a significant or potentially contagious illness should avoid attending school until sufficiently recovered.
  • Staff members should inform the Principal/Head of School or the designated authority as early as possible if illness prevents them from attending work.
  • Where required, medical leave should be taken according to the school’s leave policy.
  • Staff members who become unwell during school hours should report their condition to the appropriate authority and seek medical attention if necessary.
  • Staff members should take reasonable precautions to prevent the spread of contagious illnesses in the workplace.
  • Any suspected or confirmed communicable disease should be reported to the school administration by the parent/guardian or staff member, as appropriate.
  • The school shall follow applicable public-health and government guidelines concerning communicable diseases.
  • The school may take appropriate preventive measures, including enhanced cleaning, temporary separation of an ill person, and communication with parents/guardians or staff.
  • Personal medical information shall be handled respectfully and kept confidential, except where disclosure is required for health, safety, or legal reasons.
  • In case of a medical emergency, the school shall provide appropriate first aid and contact the parent/guardian or emergency contact without unnecessary delay.
  • Where necessary, the school may arrange urgent medical assistance or transportation to a medical facility.
  • Emergency contact details provided by parents/guardians and staff should be kept updated.
  • Students and staff should return only when they are sufficiently well to participate safely in school activities.
  • Any specific return-to-school/work requirements shall be based on medical advice and applicable public-health guidance.
  • The school shall avoid unnecessary discrimination or stigma against anyone who has experienced an illness.
  • Parents/guardians are responsible for informing the school about relevant health conditions or illnesses that may affect their child’s safety or participation.
  • Teachers and staff members are responsible for promptly reporting significant health concerns to the appropriate school authority.
  • Everyone in the school community is expected to cooperate with health and safety measures to protect students, staff, and visitors.
